Best Art Apps for Painting

There are many applications at our fingertips that can enhance our creative process. In this blog post, I'll introduce you to a selection of apps that have become indispensable tools in my painting journey. From inspiration to organization, these apps cover a spectrum of needs for artists.

Procreate

A good and fun way to get colour and composition ideas for your painting is to play with your paintings in the App Procreate. This is the way I do it: I take a picture of my work in progress, download it on my iPad, open it in Procreate and start to play. Which background works better, what if I add some patterns or some collage? You can try it all out without ruining your painting and getting your hands dirty!

It is a paid App but it is definitely worth it and I couldn't do without it anymore, I use it in almost every painting. I have made a YouTube video on how I use Procreate, I hope it will help you. Don’t hesitate to ask me if you have questions!

Notanizer

This Free app helps you to convert you reference picture in two, three or four values. Values are the dark and the light parts in your painting and are very important, even more important than colour!

So when you turn your reference picture into black and white and then print it out with only 4 values, it will simplifie your painting process. When your painting is finished, make a picture, turn it into black and white and compare it to the reference picture.

Drawing Grid

Drawing a grid over your reference photo and then drawing a grid of equal ratio on your painting surface will make it easier when you want to copy a reference picture.

Then you draw the image on your canvas, focusing on one square at a time, until the entire image has been transferred. Once you're finished, you simply erase or paint over the grid lines, and start working on your painting. It is quite a time-consuming process, but it will help to improve your drawing and observational skills!

Wall Picture

This is a great way to show your paintings in beautiful (and tidy ..) rooms! You can choose from several different rooms and can even add a passepartout or a frame to match your painting.

There is a Free 'Light' version of the App and a paid one if you want to have more rooms to choose from.

Pinterest

When you need inspiration or references for your art, Pinterest is a treasure trove of images, mood boards, and ideas. Create your personal mood boards and pin your favorite art pieces to get inspired for your next project.

Museum by Sketchy

This is a great app with thousands of reference pictures to paint or draw, you can even post your creations in their app to inspire other artists.

Unsplash

Unsplash is a databank with thousands of copy right free stock photos to paint and to inspire you. The photos on Unsplash are free to use and can be used for most commercial, personal projects, and for editorial use. You do not need to ask permission from or provide credit to the photographer or Unsplash, although it is appreciated when possible.

Creative Process

Incorporating technology into your artistic process can open up a world of possibilities. These apps have significantly improved my painting journey, allowing me to explore new horizons and streamline my creative process. Give them a try, and you may discover how they will help you in your painting process!

Remember that these app choices are based on my personal preferences, and there are many other fantastic apps out there. I love to know if which apps you are using!

Happy painting! 🎨✨
