Have you heard about water-based cold wax? You can mix it with acrylics! I've been experimenting with it a lot lately and found that you can achieve almost the same effects as with regular cold wax and oils but without the drying time, the fumes and the oil paint. I compared the two and here is my verdict:
They're not the same but I love them both! Working with oils and cold wax medium is more satisfying because of it’s waxy consistency and it will always be my first love. It is richer in colour and you can create more depth in your paintings.
However, I must admit, I've become a huge fan of the water-based cold wax. While you can achieve textures with other acrylic mediums, the beautiful transparency and unique effects of cold wax can only be achieved with the water-based version. I use Powerwax from Powertex, there is a Powertex representative in most countries so it shouldn’t be difficult for you to find. They have other fun product to try out too, like Rusty Powder and Bister.
